<description xmlns:cf="http://www.microsoft.com/schemas/rss/core/2005" cf:type="html"><![CDATA[In 1916, Lingnan University established the agricultural department under the auspices of Prof. G. W. Groff, and planned to form an herbarium, then sent students to study the collection and preparation of plant specimens under the direction of Prof. F. D. Merrill, the botanist of Philippine Bureau of Science. Not long after, Merrill was invited to Guangzhou to organize the herbarium. This is the earliest herbarium in China, which played an active role in the spread of modern botany in China. However, this period of history is not widely studied within the academic community. This article based on historical sources, strives to unravel and present this overlooked narrative.]]></description>
